5 Detox Cleanses for Busy People

I get asked a lot about doing detoxes, cleanses and fasts. Since so many of you are curious about them, I thought I’d take some time to do a few blog posts covering these topics. If you are not familiar with what a detox cleanse or fast is, it’s basically when you take some time to refrain from consuming certain things. These things could be sugar, meat, dairy products… or it could even be a time period when you stop eating anything for several days or weeks. There are many, many ways to cleanse and fast, so finding something that you can do as a beginner is not difficult.

If you’ve never fasted or cleansed before, my advice is to start slow. You don’t need to go on a week-long fast in the beginning. You can start with just a day or a few days, or if you’re really, really new, you can start with just a few hours. Whatever you feel comfortable with and feel you can accomplish should be the main focus.

I’ve done many cleanses and fasts throughout my life. I’ve done The Master Cleanse, water fasts, green smoothie fasts, juice fasts, detox cleanses and more. I believe in the power of fasting and cleansing because I have seen and experienced the results for myself. I have healed so many ailments and emotional challenges through fasting that I cannot recommend them enough. I will continue to be a lifelong faster and cleanser because I also believe it is one of the “secrets” to optimum health and longevity.

So what if you are a busy person? Can you still do a fast or a cleanse? I say yes. Yes, you can do a detox cleanse if you’re busy or sick. As a matter of fact, if you feel you are coming down with a cold or a bug, one of the best ways to help the healing process is to fast. Stop eating and drink only water so your body has the energy to heal and rid itself of anything that may be causing the problem. I always make my son sleep when he’s sick, and he’s usually only sick a day or two, instead of a week or more.

Here are a few simple detox cleanse ideas if you’re a busy person or a detox cleanse newbie:

  1. Try a partial day fast. You can do 12 hours or meal-to-meal. For example, you can commit to drinking nothing but water from 8pm to 8am, or you can fast from dinner until the dinner the next day. I have gotten several of my friends to start this way and they have had great results.
  2. Drink nothing but juice for one day. The ideal way to do this would be do buy your own juicer and make your juice fresh right before you drink it. But since you’re busy, you could do a juice cleanse of juices that you purchase from a health food store. Or you could do something like cranberry juice (real cranberry juice, nothing artificial) all day. Again, another simple and easy to do cleanse.
  3. Do a smoothie cleanse. One of my personal favorites is doing green smoothie cleanses. This is one of the easier ways to detox because the smoothies can be very filling so you won’t feel too hungry. You can do this for a day or for a week or longer. Just make green smoothies for breakfast, lunch and dinner and that’s all you’ll have to think about.
  4. A fruit cleanse. This is where you eat nothing but fruit for one or more days. It’s best to do organic if possible, but if not, just make sure you wash your fruit really, really, well. I’ve done this with bananas several times.
  5. Salads all day for one or more days. This is similar to the fruit cleanse except you eat salads for every meal. You could do a fruit salad for breakfast and then a green salad for lunch and dinner. Just remember NOT to load up on creamy dressings, croutons, or cheeses on your salads. You want to keep it all raw veggies and maybe some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as a dressing.

These are just a few ideas to get your started with a detox or a cleanse. Of course, this can also be a prepping step if you’d like to go deeper and do something a little bit more intense. I usually do something like this before I go into a water fast or before I start an herbal cleanse. These simple simple cleanses will prepare your body for the next level of detoxing without causing too much of a shock to your system.

I’ll post more information about detoxing and cleanses in the next few posts. If you have any questions about this topic or future post ideas, feel free to let me know in the comments below!
