Why I always carry a notebook…

One of the best things I’ve ever done in the process of setting myself up for success is carrying a notebook every day. Yes, a notebook always nearby for jotting things down has been a lifesaver for me in so many ways.

It’s probably no secret if you’ve been following me for awhile, that I have a crazy passion for traveler’s notebooks. And as time as gone on, I have also fallen in love with all types of planners, agendas, journals and other similar writing accessories.

But the main reason I carry a journal or a notebook with me all the time is that I have discovered that I am no good when I focus on the relentless mundane and trivial things that pop up demanding my attention quite frequently throughout the day. I have seen my productivity suffer, as well as time being wasted when I try to remember whatever it was that I was thinking about earlier.

I think it was David Allen in the book, Getting Things Done, who said that our brains are not meant to be storage devices. In other words, it’s not practical or even desirable to constantly have to remember things all day every day as we move throughout our lives. Our brains function best when we are “free” and clear to think about creative things, and when we are able to come up with ideas for making our lives better. It’s a waste of mental space to keep track of errands, grocery lists or the cabinets that need to be fixed for one reason or another.

Having a notebook with me all the time has also improved my goal setting, and my focus on achieving the things I set out to do. Whenever I’m out and about, or if I have a bit of down time at some point in my day, I can reach for my notebook and write, reflect or review what I wrote before. It also gives me a break from looking at my mobile devices. Not to mention I just really like the look and feel of a pretty, or even not so pretty, notebook when I need one. It’s like a trusty, reliable companion that always has room for you and your thoughts.

The notebook I’m carrying around now is a pretty leather traveler’s notebook that I purchased not too long ago. It has four separate notebooks in it that I can use to categorize topics, information and ideas. The nice thing about traveler’s notebooks is that you can change the inserts whenever necessary, and you still have room to continue adding entries as the notebooks become full.

Have you tried carrying a notebook with you all the time yet? It doesn’t have to be large, fancy or complicated. Before I got into pretty notebooks, I used to carry one of the those small spiral notebooks that was no bigger than 3×5 inches. It worked great for me for many years.

If you haven’t realized the benefits of carrying around a notebook every day, try it and see what happens. You may be surprised at what you learn.
