Holiday Decorating: Ocean theme ‘tablescape’

In today’s post, I thought it would be fun to share with you an interesting idea for holiday decorating. I’ve always loved the beach and the ocean, so I thought it would be different to challenge myself to come up with holiday table decor featuring the ocean theme.

Now to start things off, I have to let you know that I am NOT anywhere near an interior designer, home decorator or stylist. I have always struggled with home decor ideas and making things look “put together.” So to take on a project such as this was really pushing me out of my comfort zone.

I worked with At Home stores to gather some unique items for this theme. I picked up some holiday ornaments, candles, seashells and of course, some plates, cups, napkins and placemats. I decided to stick with the colors of silver, teal blue and various shades of tan and brown.

My first step in this plan was creating the centerpiece. I figured since that would be the focal point, it would be important to come up with something that set the tone for the entire table. I chose a big square shaped bowl and then simply layered the pieces inside until it looked visually pleasing, as least to me.

Then, once I had the centerpiece complete, it was only a matter of finding accents that matched but didn’t take away from the main idea. So I stuck with pretty basic plates, cups and silverware that all had a silver tone finish so it worked well with the colors I chose.

Finally, I added some pretty candles and candle holders to add more texture, color and dimension to the entire table. Oh, and my son had a great idea to add in the leftover seashells and to scatter them lightly all over the table to add more fun and make it more “beachy.”

Overall, this was a fun project and I enjoyed stretching my creative muscles a bit. I really had to take my time and think about what feeling I was trying to capture, and how to communicate that without it being too overwhelming. I did have a hard time figuring it all out, but I just did my best and hoped it all worked.

What kind of decorating do you do for the holidays? Do you do the same thing each year or do you change it up every so often? I’d love to know in the comments below!
